Perhaps what's so appealing about Halloween for an adult is that we give ourselves permission to go outside the normal boundaries of our lives. We don't even realize how much energy goes into just fitting in. We have a lot of do's and don'ts in so many areas of our life so on HW, once a year, we have license to play. We get to wear a costume and a mask and be some alternate self. The normal boundaries fall away. Our life, for a few hours, is played out in our imagination and on some stage. Our society has few outlets like this. We need more healthy forms of play that are social in nature. For some, getting loaded and hooting for our favorite sports team, is one outlet. Though Halloween can get weird at times, at least we're exercising ourselves in a more imaginative way. That's a generally acceptable price we can pay to let our hair down once in a while.

It is just plain good old fun, good enough reason for me.
